Clothing Drive and Youth Empowerment Session for Yadel Girls and Sunbeam Boys Home

The Kiwanis Club of Old Harbour has embarked on a clothing drive for the collection of casual and professional clothing for young men and women. The motivation of this project is to assist youngsters under state care from the  Yadel Girls Home and Sunbeam Boys Home.

In addition to the clothing, the club will be offering an interactive youth empowerment session of guidance and advice from speakers on 'Preparing for the Place of Work: Work Ethics and Professionalism in the Workplace' - topics for discussion will include dressing for success, preparing for successful work, time and money management, working with others and work ethics.

The goal of the project is to bring pleasure to the young people and equip each with knowledge relevant to their professional life.

If you know of any friend, family member, associate or Kiwanian who might interested in being apart of this project, we invite you to share this information with them.

One can make a difference, you can make a difference!

Read Around the World: The Drive to Promote Literacy

A most unique way to ‘hear’ or ‘see’ a thing is to read about it. Pictures and videos while attractive remove the uniqueness of what is heard or seen. No two or more individuals are going to read a story and take away identical interpretations of what has been read.

While movies and pictures provide for clarity on the intent of the producer, there is the diminishment of an individual’s opportunity to unleash his or her imagination on the unfolding of the story. Without video or pictures one is left with the pleasure of determining how the subjects of a story look, behave or feel.

It was preservation of the imagination of the children of Old Harbour, that spurred the Young Children Priority One (YCPO) committee of the Kiwanis Club of Old Harbour, to the holding of the “Old Harbour Read Around the World” project on March 31, 2012 at the hall of the Church of Holy Trinity, the club’s regular meeting place.

The project involved the hosting of children from some of the early childhood and primary schools, within the community, at which the Kiwanis Club of Old Harbour had previously held projects. The theme involved storytelling in a setting reminiscent of ‘good old country story time’ with the storytellers sitting in an old rocking chair surrounded by children seated on the floor.

The presenters were selected from the community and the topics were chosen to be of interest to the children, parents and teachers that were present. The presentations had three focal points:
  1. Raise awareness about reading and its importance to a child’s development.
  2. Entertain the children with exciting storytelling
  3. Cultural exchange: sharing the perceptions on reading held by other cultures
Through the support of the manufacturing and retail businesses, the Jamaica Library Services and a local bookstore along with the presenters, parents and children the project was successfully held.

The club takes this opportunity to publicly recognize the immeasurable support of the businesses, within the community, for the holding of the event of the “Old Harbour Read Around the World”.

"We expect to make it an annual event."

A Day of Care, A Day of Volunteering

It was a day of care and volunteering at the Divisional Day of Care Project for the homeless at Sir William Grant Park on December 3, 2011 where we donated clothing to the homeless and those in need. What a great way to kick start the season of giving and sharing.

Scores of persons came out to the one day project from parts of Downtown, Kingston and St.Andrew which included the young, the young at the heart and the elderly, many of whom were homeless and in need of clothing, food and medical assistance.

It was a pleasure to be among one of the many non-profit organizations who assisted our time and efforts to those in need as we worked ferociously to donate clothes to a thick crowd of homeless persons, many of whom were men. It was a long and hectic day at Sir William Grant Park, Downtown, Kingston but it was indeed a full-filling one.

BIG THANKS to the Kiwanis Club of Eastern Kingston and Port Royal who came on board for this project and to the team from the Boys Brigade and CVSS for organizing a project which was such a success.  Great job guys! Unity is STRENGTH!

Make my Smile BRIGHTER - Dental Month Project at Nightingale Grove Basic School

We ventured to the Nightingale Grove Basic School for our first project for the administrative year 2011/2012 and this project was indeed a SUCCESS.

The Kiwanis family distributed toothbrushes and toothpaste to the students ages 3-6 in honour of Dental Awareness Month and shared valuable moments with the children.

We enjoyed every moment spent with the children and look forward to our next project.
